CAN NELL FOLLOW UP IN WHEATLEY MEMORIAL?

Ian Fortune

The Eamon Wheatley Memorial A4/A5 525 continues at Newbridge this evening with the second round dominating the eight-race card. Mylerstown Nell set the standard in the opening round with a narrow victory in 29.08.

She won’t have to wait long to attempt to follow up that success as she is drawn in red in the first of the four quarter finals. The near-veteran daughter of Ballymac Anton was lightning quick from boxes last week and will again emerge as the one to beat if repeating that start.

If failing to do so, however, she could find herself in a spot of bother as many of her rivals are young and open to much improvement. Mylerstown Nell gets the nod but nothing will come easy.

NOTORIOUS READY TO STEP UP

Heat 2 is wide open. None of the six were particularly noteworthy in the opening round but many have gone faster in the past.

Monbeg Notorious stands out as the greyhound with the highest ceiling in this contest. If he can repeat his best Enniscorthy form or go even faster, he could emerge as the one to beat. Twilight Vinnie and Playdate Nero are selected as the main dangers.

CINNAMON WITH A KIND DRAW

Snazzy Cinnamon was just behind the aforementioned Mylerstown Nell last week, racing prominently from the start.

If she can reproduce that level of form in Heat 3, she can emerge as the one to beat. Cross Bono looks open to huge improvement after catching the eye last week and is seen as a big threat, while his kennel companion Fouroads Rocket and the consistent veteran Home Darragh are also capable of playing a part should things fall their way.

COPPER TO REVERSE FORM

The strong running Sleipnir won’t be far away in Heat 4 of finding the gaps at the right time, but Coola Copper will be hopeful of reversing last week’s form with his rival from a kind draw on the fence.

Cool Copper led for much of the way, only to be picked up late.

If he were to get off the front again, he may prove harder to reel in this evening. Others included in calculations include Glenview Lady and Careful Prince.
