STAR FASTEST IN BOSCO GLEESON MEMORIAL

Ian Fortune

The Bosco Gleeson Memorial continued at Newbridge on Friday night and A Lucky Star set the standard with a superb 28.74 in the opening semi-final, in turn initiating a superb heat double for Jerry Melia.

A winner in 28.70 and 28.92 in the two previous rounds, it was perhaps a surprise he was available at 2-1 at the off but he made light work of his task. The son of Ballymac Bolger and Julies Paradise broke best from four and never saw another rival. Maintaining a strong gallop throughout, A Lucky Star emerged a four length scorer over Tempus Vincere.

MARTY COMPLETE’S JERRY’S DOUBLE

The Melia double came in the second heat as a half brother to A Lucky Star, Belfast Marty, came home in front.

The son of Droopys Sydney badly missed the kick but ran a clever bend to challenge off the second turn. Sunshine Zoe led briefly down the back straight but Belfast Marty moved to the front into the third turn. Once doing so, he was never headed. Pearl Supreme ran on well but Belfast Marty held on to score by a half length in 29.02.

SULI TOO STRONG IN DUAL DISTANCE DECIDER

Tinnock Suli took the final of the Parade Jackets A4/A5 550/575 for Michael Devereaux. Never too far off the pace, the son of Ballymac Bolger drew closer into the third turn before making his move on the run in. Relishing the additional yardage on offer in the 575yd contest, Tinnock Suli raced on to a three length victory over Monroe Ally in 31.90.

BONO WITH A BRIGHT START

A couple of bright prospects dipped their toe in the water in the opening round of the October Unraced on the undercard. The ON2 525 saw the likes of Morning Bono and Pennys Show make a fine impression.

Morning Bono was an even money favourite to win the opening heat for Enda and Kevin Losty and the son of Broadstrand Bono and Aine Dubh certainly didn’t disappoint his supporters. Leading from the opening bend, he ran further and further clear to eventually cross the line with eighteen lengths in hand on Lightfoot Anvika in 28.86.

PENNYS PUTS ON A SHOW

Pennys Show won in similar fashion, albeit by not quite the same margin.

Representing Eugene and Rosemary Price, the son of Glencorbry Pat and Pennys Meala took charge on the bend to emerge a four length scorer over Singalong Ted in 28.87.

MADGE LEAVES IT LATE

The final heat saw Singalong Madge overcome early problems to score for Gilbert Anderson and Keith Powell.

She missed the start and bumped the fence but came from last position to go second at the third turn. The daughter of Ballymac Bolger and Lovee Dovee got up in the final stride to deny Shared Future by a neck in 29.74.
