A text from Brigid Murphy in Cork confirmed the sad news that her beloved retired greyhound, Skyler, had passed away today, Monday 3rd March. We have no doubt that Brigid, Sheena and the extended family are heartbroken at the loss of their wonderful pet.
Born on the 21st August 2011, Skyler will be known to many, whether they recognise her name or not. You see Skyler was a familiar fixture in Curraheen Park Greyhound Stadium with Brigid, attending race nights and events to promote retired Greyhounds as pets and the Irish Retired Greyhound Trust (IRGT).
In 2018, Skyler, along with Brigid and another of her greyhounds Paddy, was one of the stars of the Our People, Their Stories series, a project by Greyhound Racing Ireland (then Irish Greyhound Board) taking viewers behind the scenes to tell the stories of the IRGT, the people who work with them and some of the greyhounds who found their new homes in retirement with the charity. You can take a look at their story on the video below and when you’re done, be sure to check out the rest on grireland.ie/OurPeopleTheirStories including the story of Darcy. Darcy was Skyler’s son who was placed with a wonderful family in Dingle through the IRGT.
Skyler was even a TV star, appearing on RTE's Today Show with Maura and Daithi to show everyone how loving and gentle retired racing greyhounds are.
As Brigid so rightly said, Skyler has “opened a lot of people’s eyes to the beautiful temperament of greyhounds”.
While the Murphy family mourn their loss we hope that they will take comfort in over 13 years of happy memories and the knowledge that Skyler will live on forever in all of our hearts.
