REVISIONS TO RACING AND RACE GRANTS

GRI

RCÉ has been reviewing the current situation regarding racing schedules; the strength of dog pools; the current demand for racing and the financial impacts associated with Covid 19 restrictions. A detailed national analysis of dog pools and a “Pool to Race” for each track was recently presented to a meeting of the National Greyhound Consultative Forum.  The general consensus appears to be that an index of 2.5 i.e. all things being equal, each greyhound should race once every 2-3 weeks, is an appropriate target.

In the latter part of 2020, RCÉ had introduced temporary amendments to racing schedules at various tracks by way of additional races on a card or an additional meeting on an infrequent basis. These temporary changes were specifically focussed to alleviate local pressures on race cards due to strengthening dog pools, particularly in the regular non SIS segment of dog pools.

Having regard for consistent trends on a national basis, RCÉ has now agreed a proposal for the period January –June 2021 which will result in an additional 42 races per week when compared to the race schedule over the same period in 2019. The additional races will be distributed to the regular non SIS element of dog pools on a national basis.

The proposals for the increase in racing activity will require a distribution of current prizemoney resources sourced from a reduction of 10% in all general race grants which will be reviewed when the commercial activities of RCÉ through Tote, restaurant and general admissions can be resumed. RCÉ continues to operate in a situation where all commercial income through general admissions, tote and food & beverage has been eliminated. Every effort continues to be made to maintain racing activity. The continued operation of greyhound racing on a behind closed doors basis during the current Level 5 restrictions is very positive.

The proposals in relation to each track is set out in the table below;

The revised racing schedules and prizemoney arrangements as set out above will come into effect from 11th January 2021.

RCÉ is in negotiations at present with SIS regarding a renewal of the current SIS agreement which expires in February 2021. Covid 19 restrictions are impacting on SIS operations particularly in the UK where many bookmaker outlets remain closed due to government decisions on Covid 19 restrictions.

The Tralee SIS meeting on the Sunday has now ceased. While advance work is being done to prepare for an additional early morning meeting (Monday) at Limerick Greyhound track, any date for the commencement of this meeting is subject to confirmation from SIS and is impacted on by the restrictions now evident in the UK. RCÉ will be engaging further with SIS in early January 2021 to assess the operating environment at that time and work towards securing a renewed agreement for the operation of SIS meetings.
