Rásaíocht Con Éireann (RCÉ) has paid tribute to Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh who has died at the age of 93.

Frank Nyhan, Chairman of GRI described the Kerry native and former broadcaster as having a “lifelong passion for greyhound racing”, adding, “Mícheál spoke as passionately about greyhounds as he once did about the exploits of Jack O’Shea or Jimmy Barry-Murphy on the playing fields of Fitzgerald Stadium and Croke Park.”

Mr. Nyhan continued, “Mícheál had a lifetime involvement in greyhound racing. He was well known for anchoring a radio show called Sunday Sport, which he named one of his greyhounds after, calling Radio Sport. Micheal was particularly proud of being inducted into the Hall of Fame 2003 at the National Greyhound Racing Awards.”

“Mícheál’s greatest triumph in the sport occurred shortly after his retirement in 2010 when his dog Razldazl Rioga, a gift from the Irish Greyhound Board to mark his retirement the previous year, won the Irish Laurels in Cork, which is one of the Classics of the Irish greyhound calendar,” added Mr. Nyhan. “The Dolores Ruth-trained dog went on to secure 23 wins from 51 outings culminating in its final and successful outing in the Irish Sprint Cup at Dundalk in 2013.”

“Mícheál continued to be a regular visitor to the home of Irish greyhound racing at Shelbourne Park up to recent years,” added Mr. Nyhan. “His passing will be keenly felt by the wider greyhound community across Ireland. The thoughts of everyone at RCÉ are with his family and his vast circle of friends and former colleagues. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam,” concluded Mr. Nyhan.
