Greyhound racing lost one of its greatest friends over the weekend with the sad passing of Martin Fortune.
A talented man with a greyhound, he trained many stars through the years but is perhaps best remembered as a classic winning handler after Maestro Mike landing the 1998 National Produce Stakes at Clonmel.
Of course, famously Martin also went in chase of the trainer’s title at Shelbourne Park and, after an incredible twelve-month period, was crowned Shelbourne Park Trainer of the Year. To this day, Martins pursuitand success is still spoken of by many in the sport.
But aside from being a top man with a greyhound, Martin was also great company. A kind hearted man, he was never shy of a word and was a friend to many. While he admitted last year that he couldn’t get to the track as often as he would like, he kept his finger on the pulse. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him and were lucky enough to spend time in his company.
We would like to send our sincerest condolences to his wife Gert, son Mark, daughters Claire and Ann, his beloved grandchildren, extended family and many friends.
May He Rest In Peace
