KANE FLIES BUT ELVES AT PLAY AT ENNISCORTHY

Ian Fortune

Those naughty Christmas elves were at it again at Enniscorthy on Thursday night as the opening semi-final of the valuable Lord Unraced Stake had to be declared void after the jacket came of the hare at the third turn.

Thankfully, the second heat went off without a hitch and Glengar Kane posted a stunning fastest of the competition 28.51 on his way to yet another wide margin success.

KANE REMAINS UNBEATEN IN STYLE

Glengar Kane was the 1-2 favourite for the second heat and it was son evident the Pat Buckley trained star was overpriced.

Breaking smartly from three, he was over a length in front by the turn and proceeded to draw clear.

Ballinabola Josh turned closest to Richard Colwell’s son of Grangeview Ten and Mystical Luna but was no match. Powering further and further clear, Glengar Kane eventually landed the spoils by eight and a half lengths in 28.51.

Deerjet Matilda, a kennel companion to the winner, came through for second with Ballinabola Josh taking third another five lengths adrift. To highlight the strength of the display, the winner’s time was among the ten fastest ever recorded for the 525yd trip at Enniscorthy.

HEARTBREAK FOR BLASTOFF AS HARE MALFUNCTIONS

The real drama came in the opening heat, however.

While Glengar Kane posted a sensational time, many shrewd observers were of the opinion Elite Blastoff would have gone as fast as he was a mile clear at the point of the hare malfunction.

More importantly, all six greyhounds were checked over by the vet and all were reported to be in tip top shape. The semi-final will be re-run on Monday, December 22nd with the final set for the final meeting of the year on Monday, December 29th. That will be a wonderful night at Enniscorthy and those planning on making the journey on the 29th are reminded that the opening race will be at 5pm.
