It’s with great sadness we must report the passing of a real greyhound man, John O’Dwyer.
John was involved in both greyhound racing and coursing for much of his life and would have been known to so many in both sports.
He was heavily involved in the National Coursing meeting for many years but in recent times is better known for his ownership of numerous top-class greyhounds with most carrying his famed ‘Rural’ prefix. In fact, only on Saturday night Rural Reward raced to an impressive victory at Shelbourne Park.
But, of course, John’s finest night in the sport came in 2016 when Rural Hawaii raced to Derby glory in front of the packed Shelbourne Park stands. Jointly owned with his son Michael and wife Helen, the son of Head Bound and their own Duck Fat gave John a night he would never forget.
You could sense that John enjoyed every second of the Derby, never missing a round while he was like an excited schoolboy at the Derby lunch. That night in September 2016 meant so much to him and his family.
A gentle man with a real ability to tell a story, he was tremendous company and his many friends will miss him dearly. We send on our sincerest condolences to his wife Helen, his daughter Kay, his sons Michael, Brian, Ronan and Mark, his many grandchildren, his extended family and wide circle of friends. May He Rest In peace.
