FUTURE STARS MALDINI AND MINEOLA SHONE ON DEBUT

Ian Fortune

In the continued search for some of the best racing debuts around Shelbourne Park, Ian Reeson came up with the goods.

He reminded me of a night in December 2003 when two future superstars debuted on the same night.

Droopys Maldini and Mineola Farloe were both very special and, while their debut times weren’t quite as hot as some of those we have mentioned in recent days, track conditions were far slower and it was clear both were destined for big things.

Seamus Graham steered Mineola Farloe to reach two English Derby deciders, finishing fourth to Westmead Hawk in 2005 and runner-up to the same rival in 2006. He would also win an Easter Cup and Tote Gold Cup in what was a spectacular career. He debuted in 28.73, highlighting his obvious talents.

On the same card, in the same unraced competition, Droopy Maldini posted 28.80 on debut. Of course, he too had a brilliant career, twice running up the Irish Derby behind Like A Shot in 2004 and He Said So in 2005. The Fraser Black trained star would also win the 2005 Champion Stakes and Dundalk International cementing his position as one of the very best this century.

Don’t forget, if you too can remember any impressive Shelbourne Park racing debuts, don’t hesitate to get in touch on news@grireland.ie
