DRAW TO PLAY MAJOR PART IN BROWNSTOWN DECIDER

    Ian Fortune

A whopping €6,500 is on offer to winner of the Brownstown Tango & NTSC Open Bitch Unraced at Newbridge this evening.

The competition has seen the emergence of a number of superstars in the past and this year’s renewal is likely to be no different.

Conditions haven’t allowed for ultra-fast runs but we are left with a final packed with high class ladies that seem certain to go on big things. After two powerful displays, Droopys Bundle is the one to beat but she the draw hasn’t been overly kind to the Robert Gleeson trained starlet.

Drawn in five, the daughter of Droopys Sydney needs to come away on terms, at worst, if she is to assert before the second turn. The obvious danger to Droopys Bundle, outside of the draw, is Callawayballymac.

She may be a full fifteen months older than Droopys Bundle but is also having just her third career start. If she traps on terms from an inside draw, she will be difficult to contain into the opening bend. She finished three lengths behind Droopys Bundle in the opening round but her connections will believe she can reverse that form.

Of the remainder, Ballinabola Pixi has gone fastest with a 29.00 return in the opening round. She also faces a tough draw in six and needs to find something on the clock to worry the big two. The same can certainly be said for the Rosemary Price trained duo of Pennys Anything and Pennys Wildpoppy. Walkabout Pepper, who finished eight lengths behind Droopys Bundle last week, completes the line-up and needs plenty of luck.

There is no doubt, at this stage in their career, the big two stand out. The chances of Callawayballymac are obvious. She can go up fast along the fence and perhaps dictate the pace into the back straight but full faith remains with Droopys Bundle. If she makes a slick exit, Matthew Derrick’s star can race upsides Callawayballymac into the turn before asserting. Expect Droopys Bundle to come home clear of Callawayballymac before setting her sights on bigger targets in the near future.
