    The doors of Kilcolgan Castle were opened to a large crowd on Sunday afternoon to celebrate the launch of the Connacht Derby sponsorship in Galway Greyhound Stadium.

    Owner of Kilcolgan Castle, Karen Geoghegan, has signed a new sponsorship agreement which welcomes the return of the event to the Galway racing calendar.

    The Kilcolgan Castle Connacht Derby offers an impressive €9,000 to the winner and will get underway on Friday 21st February, running weekly until the Final on Friday 14th March.

    Mark Maguire, Racing Manager at Galway Greyhound Stadium, welcomed the sponsorship announcement saying “We hope to attract a high quality entry with a fantastic €9,000 winner’s prize. We already have entries rolling in with plenty of people hoping to make the trip to Galway to be part of the competition.”

    Hughie Keleghan, Chairman of the local Greyhound Owners & Breeders Association, added “Everyone in the WGOBA is really looking forward to the Connacht Derby and we had a fantastic day at the launch, thanks to Karen for her hospitality. The competition will be well supported by the local Greyhound Community. A lot of children come to Galway Greyhound Stadium each week and we’re delighted to get them involved through a Junior Nominators competition too.”
