MICHAEL BRENNAN

MICHAEL BRENNAN

It’s with real sadness we must report the passing of one of the most respected men in greyhound racing, Michael Brennan.

For a number of decades, Michael was known as one of the best breeders in the land with the “Druids” man producing many track stars.

He was particularly prominent in the nineties, breeding Druids Omega to land the Guinness 600 in 1995 and his litter brother Druids Elprado to win the Reading Masters. Their full brother from a previous mating, Druids Wally, was also a star and went on to be a successful sire.

Their dam Druids Dalroy also threw Sunshine Penny. She was the dam of Leger champion Extra Dividend, while a daughter of hers, Sandy Penny, was the dam of the brilliant Derby winner Bypass Byway.

But in truth, there are too many wonderful greyhounds that emerged from Michael’s Druids Lodge outfit to mention, such was his success on both sides of the Irish Sea.

Aside from being a terrific breeder of greyhounds, Michael was a gentleman in the true sense of the work. From an era of so many great men, he was amongst the stand outs. The best of company, he loved nothing more than sending out a winner and celebrating with family and friends.

This was never more evident when capturing the Irish Grand National at Harold’s Cross with Druids Aghadoe in 2005. Remarkably, Michael returned with Distant Legend in 2008 to again win the Grand National.

The star jumper, who was owned by Michael’s daughter Julie and her husband Michael Power, was a true great of hurdle racing, returning in 2009 to retain his title. At this time, Michael was almost single handedly keeping Irish hurdle racing in the news.

Michael will leave a great legacy behind but he also leaves behind so many friends. A wonderful man and the best of company, he will be sadly missed by those that knew him.

We would like to send on our sincerest condolences to his children Karen, John, Susan, Julie and Tracey, his sons-in-law Moss and Michael Power, his beloved grandchildren Niamh, Conor, Aoife, Michael, Molly, Thomas, John and Joan Power and Jack Forrest, nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

May He Rest In Peace.
