Greyhound racing lost a great friend and character with the news that classic winning trainer Ray McCarrick had sadly passed away yesterday.
Described by most as a gent and the best company, Ray trained some superb greyhounds through the years but his greatest night came when landing the 1994 Sporting Press Irish Oaks at Shelbourne Park with Shimmering Wings.
The daughter of Alpine Minister was simply stunning through the bitch classic, displaying superb early speed in each of the rounds before producing a foot-perfect display in the final. Of course, Ray trained many more stars including the brilliantly fast Frozen Problem.
He leaves behind a wonderful legacy and we would likely to send on our sincerest condolences to his wife Kitty, daughters Sinead, Carmel, Kate and Sally, his beloved grandchildren Ernie and Sonny, his brothers John, Gabriel, Finbarr, sisters Cabrini, Siobhan and Eithne, in laws, extended family and many friends.
May He Rest In peace.
