Movers and Shakers at the Dogs

Saturday 15th August Heats

Heat 13
Secreto heads the betting and for all the promise he has displayed he looks woefully short. The one I will take to beat him is the Brendan Matthews trained Leave At Dawn who has massive pace but often loses his races at trap rise, if he can get it together there is a massive run in him. Vulturi doesn't look the dog he was so the improving Heathlawn Tiger can bag minor honors. 5-4-1

Heat 14
There is a nice blend of early pace and big finishers and all have a realistic change of victory. Blastoff McCaw and Knocktoo Garry will blaze and early trail but i doubt either will see out the trip strong enough to hold the finishers. Urban Gossip looks massively over priced considering the company she has kept and if things fall right she is a huge player. Cable Bay is drawn too far off the fence but his overall pace will see him through along with Sidarian Teejay. 2-3-5

Heat 15
Ardrahan Zindi produced a sizzling 28.30 run last week and went into many Derby notebooks. She will have her work cut out to hold the challenge of the classy Paradise Maverik who will get his Derby campaign off to the perfect start. Jackal Frampton seems to never run a bad race and can challenge for the places. 3-2-6

Heat 16
Francis Murray seems to have a strangle hold on the betting here with both Fair Taxes and Overcharge taking up a sizable chuck of the margin. Preference is for the former who showed his well being with a recent 28.20 trail. Black Tom took the Tipperary Cup in fine style and could be one for value hunters outright at long odds. Highview Event is a pup going places and will make his presence felt. 1-5-4

Heat 17
Amazing Dude will be a very warm order here and I would love to take him on but this is not the strongest race in the world. He was legless at the pickup in his last trial,so while he might do a flashy run early on and cannot have him on my mind for outright honors. Droopys Navas is well drawn out wide and will give the jolly most to think about. Allen Wizard is a consistent sort at a lower level but may bag a qualifying spot. 1-6-4

Heat 18
All eyes will be on Ballydoyle Honey who kicks off her Derby campaign in a soft looking contest. It should be a case of how far once she goes through the gears. I feel there could be a touch in Deanridge Pennys at some stage in the Derby, he can grab a place and live to fight another day. Padua Supreme has a nice finishing kick that could see him nick a spot on the podium. 3-1-2

Heat 19
Morning Music clocked a tasty 29.44 last week and will start a very warm order here. He lacks a bit of early pace but should eat these up and spit them out down the back if he gets a run. Clares Wonder looks to be regressing but this once classy operator has the draw to go close if he can recapture his form. Doubtful Venture is on quite the roll and will again give a good account of himself. 2-3-6

Heat 20
Ballybough Mondo can rocket to the bend and should string these out until the 3rd where supporters should have the oxygen tanks on standby. Laughil Duke has monster pace and once getting loose down the back he will have this sewn up by the time they swing in for home. Tyrur Supermac will come on for the run while Save The Don was very impressive at the Cross last time out and will go well if getting a run. 4-6-5

Heat 21
This looks a very open contest on paper and while many will be drawn to the 28.23 trial run of Material Man, he has disappointed here in the past. Mucho Macho Man is well drawn on the fence and he can ping a lid, if he gets free early he won't be for catching. Old Redwood Mick is always capable of a big run and cannot be discounted. 1-5-6

Heat 22
This promises to be a cracking race with with two major fancies for outright honors in Tyrur Tommy and Farloe Rumble set to clash. Tommy had been in great form when last seen and should improve from his latest trial. He has plenty of early boot and I can't see anything back running him. Farloe Rumble will put it right up to him but will have to settle for second best this time. Barefoot Artist is no slouch and will capitalize on any mistakes from the big two. 4-6-5

Heat 23
Offshore Bound will likely start odds on and even though he should win at the prices he wouldn't be for me. Whizzing Archie beats the postman to work and should be away like two men and a wee lad around the first. He will need trouble in behind to hold on but at the prices he is worth chancing. Highview Apollo is capable of a big run if getting a run early but is drawn very far out. 1-3-6

Heat 24
I do love a jolly in the lucky last to send the punters home happy and Riverside Pat will have the stands giving the Oi's Oi's when he stretches clear down the back. Borna Sounds has some nice Thurles form that has to be respected. It will be tight for third but maybe Lefanta Sky can just shade it. 4-6-2

Thursday 13th

Heat 1

A real cracker of a race to start off with but what a shame Laughil Blake was a late withdrawal. Ballybough Mike fairly took off on his last visit to Shelbourne clocking a sizzling 29.47 and with the Murt Leahy kennel in such great form he is the one to side with here. Slippery Fred had a very eye catching trial 28.34 on the 6th but may just need the run. He will continue to improve throughout the competition and would be my idea of the overall winner. Mimis Ace is a consistent top level performer and should book his place in the next round. 4-3-2

Heat 2
Fairly straight forward this one, Sidarian Vega is a smash and grab job. He will lead up the fence and put the race to bed early. Laughil Bolt could have his hands full to clear Budgie Bypass who have been running really well lately and may just shade second from the Guilfoyle hound. The rest look up against it. 1-5-6

Heat 3
This has the makings of a very messy race with Gaytime Hawk likely to move off from 1 and 4 railers occupying the next boxes. It looks to be a plot draw for Skywalker Farloe but he looks to be no where near the dog he was. On the draw alone he should qualify but is not my idea of the winner. I am going to take a change on Swords Ace to clear the trouble early and once in front will prove tough to beat. Gaytime Hawk has not lifted a leg since his return from England but could just come alive here. 2-6-1

Heat 4
GYP Rosetti will be all the rage after last Saturdays 29.50 run but he look plenty short enough in a wide open race. Faypoint Rush came back to form last time and he has enough early pace to clear the field and make the bend, once there I can’t see him being reeled in. Highview Premier will be finishing better than anything and looks banker material for any trio players. 6-3-4

Heat 5
Slippery Snowy is a very warm order and will likely take all the beating. He showed tremendous back straight pace and there doesn’t look much in here that could contain him if he gets a run. With him being so short it opens up the market for the value seekers. Hanoi booked his placed by winning the Kilkenny trial stake and looks massive value with a nice draw along the fence. Blue Navajo is better than he showed last time and could nick a place. 5-1-6

Heat 6
Tyrur Van Gaal comes here with a big reputation but little experience. He has some serious trial form on his card but I wouldn’t be willing to take a short price on him to replicate that to race form. Rural Hawaii big up a big pot in Tralee already and will go very close but again looks a short enough price in a competitive race. Shutthe Backdoor found a way to win after blowing his break last weekend and with a better start will make them all go. Glenbuck Bill is an improving youngster who will be finishing strongly and looks value from an inside draw. 1-6-3

Heat 7
Blonde Nipper impressed me in last week’s trial where he flew to half way and tied up coming home, he might still need a run or two to get back to full fitness but should qualify handy enough here. Kina Girl was also an eye catcher in the same trial session and could be value to beat the bottom. Dolcino Flyer doesn’t look the same dog he was so Tynwald Rodney may back the last qualifying spot. 1-6-3

Heat 8
There could be absolute carnage here with Tinnock Fantasy drawn out in the stripes. He will dive for the rails from trap rise and I don’t think he can clear them all. Priceless Lassie is one of the fastest bitches in training and has massive back straight pace, if she can turn handy she should mow them down late. Droopys Bomber is a big finisher and that should see make the second round in what will surely be a messy affair. Lodgefield Todd has some fine Newbridge form and can make his prefecne felt. 4-1-3

Heat 9
A fascinating contest in store here with Ballymac Matt and Jaytee Jet set to look horns. Ballymac has the proven Shelbourne form and that should shade it on this occasion but he won’t find it easy. Dromscarra Ruby is in fine form and landed the Southern Oaks last time out, she will need to do everything right but should qualify. Greenwell Hulk swung badly off the last bend in his trial and that would suggest to me that he may be feeling something. 3-5-2

Heat 10
Coolavanny Jap looks to have a dream draw but I have not been convinced by the dog, in saying that he should book his second round ticket handy enough. Tyrur Hagler has an equally nice draw and this powerful tracker will take charge down the back and leave them for dead. Ballyhooly Henry is pacey and should be on the premises for qualification. 6-3-1

Heat 11
Farloe Blitz thanks and keep the change, next! 1-F-F

Heat 12
A trappy contest to end the night but will most holding realistic chances but I am going to side with Jaytee Valencia who’s latest trials suggest he could be coming back to last years form. House Doctor has shown immense potential in his career to date and looks one to progress. Cunning Barney ran some race last week but my worry about him would be diving left from boxes again and causing himself trouble but has enough pace to qualify. 1-6-3

August 12th 2015

Some of the trainers thoughts on their runners in the upcoming Derby rounds.

GRAHAM HOLLAND:

BALLYDOYLE HONEY - Off since the oaks final, she is a great galloper at home so never lost too much fitness wise . She is in heat 18 trap 3 with two of her kennel mates drawn in 5 and 6, both of which will be turning right out of the boxes. Very happy with both of her trials in the last two weeks, trialed out of 6 in the 525 trial and 1 in the 550. Has won from nearly every box, and is a joy to train.

SIDARIAN VEGA - Very pleased with first round draw, loves the fence. The few weeks off since the Champion Stakes final will do him a world of good, in great order since. Ran well in the Race Of Champions in Tralee and hasn't looked back since running in Shelbourne. Wouldn't be worried about a middle draw too much once there wasn't much early on his inside

RURAL HAWAII- He is a class act, really is Mr consistent at the moment. He loves Boylesports money after winning the Race Of Campions in Tralee, we hope he takes some more! Takes his races really well, has a nice turn of early pace and fly's down the back. Should get his draw most nights being a wide seed

AMAZING DUDE- Very pleased with the first round draw, loves the rails. Has won from trap one over 525 in SPK. Pleased with both trials since being knocked out in Dundalk, hope he leads in his races as like a few in the Derby there is a slight doubt about the stamina. Delighted with the break of 10 days from trial to his heat.

SIDARIAN TEEJAY- Got him over from the UK, had been lightly race due to injury over the last 12 months. Trails we have gave him were very good, but you cant beat racing. Impressed me when winning last week, battled very well to win. Hes still a bit of an unknown quantity to us but should improve with every run.

CLARES WONDER- Hasn't been firing on all cylinders since returning from the English Derby, came back with a bit of an injury. Also delighted with the 10 day break he will get from his last trial to his race. Runs Shelbourne very well, beat some top class dogs around there. Hope the racing brings him on.

ARDRAHAN ZINDI- Could be a dark horse in my team, couldn't but be in impressed with her debut race for us last time, if she keeps breaking like that she could go a long way. Only has 7 races in her career

PJ FAHY:

TYRUR VAN GAAL- I have always thought the world of this dog, hes as good as i have ever had. Looked good from the very start, hes very unlucky, always picking up little niggles. He blew me away in his first race on a track i thought was a bit on the slow side and in his second race was badly balked when getting a nice position. Yes he does lack race experience that's my only concern. He has the ability without doubt

TYRUR HAGLER- He was 9 months off the track with a torn TFL muscle, pacy dog. Better suited to the 575/600 trip. Longer run up suits him. I'm just hoping he qualifys a few rounds

TYRUR SUPERMAC- Very short of work, was 4 months off the track. Put in a few brilliant efforts last year during the Derby and Champion Stakes including a 29.57 run. Thought he drifted wide in his sprint trial last week, he usually does when he is fresh. Needs the few runs badly, will improve with each run

TYRUR TOMMY- Very good dog, id have him in my top 10 in the Derby. Great early pace and fly's down the back straight. Has a 28.20 run on his card at the back end of last year and his last two 550 runs in SPK have been impressive. Has plenty of experience and can go along way

OWEN MCKENNA:

FARLOE BLITZ- We all know what this fellow can do, ran his heart out in Wimbledon pity we just fell at the final hurdle, that's dogs! We thought about putting him away for a while but after talking to his owner Paul Ellis we decided to have a crack at taking some of John Boyles money! Paul is a sporting man, you couldn't ask for a better owner. I couldn't be happier with him since the UK, his sprint trial was brilliant and his 525 last week really impressed me, the way he ran the first two bends was unreal. If he happens to get the trapping right in Spk there will be very few dogs to live with him to the bend. The last few yards will be testing on him but hopefully he will be too far in front to worry! We are expecting a good run from this lad

FARLOE RUMBLE- Hes a younger half to Blitz, might not have his early but stays the trip strong. He looked good from the day he arrived to me. After his first few races in the unraced in Tralee i thought SPK will suit him. He picked up his Derby ticket in Tralee and his two trials in Dublin were great. His draw is a bit of a concern in the opening round (trap 6) but the 5 lad might move in on the run to the bend. I'm hoping he goes a long way, he didn't take to the traps at Wimbledon so i wouldn't take much notice of those runs

OFFSHORE BOUND- Rarely runs a bad race, won the ECC Timber 525 a few months ago. Not the most consistent at the traps but has been flying home of late. His future lies over 575/600 yards maybe. Delighted with his opening round draw, i am expecting him to give it a good rattle. Hes the type that might keep qualifying and thrives on his racing.

MURTY LEAHY

BALLYBOUGH MIKE- Couldn't be happier with this lad, didn't really surprise me in his last run. I always thought he was capable of that. His run in the Red Mills race in Kilkenny serious too. He has been a great dog for me all year and rarely runs a bad one. Mike has ran against some of the best dogs in training and held his own, he has some heat on Thursday night! Taking on the Blake will be tough, but im happy with this lad and am ready for action. Bring them on!

BALLYBOUGH MONDO- This lad is all about trapping, which he proved in Clonmel. If he breaks id fancy him to go up with the best of them, 550 might be on the tough side for him but he deserves to take his place in the Derby, his owner Pat Carroll has been great to me and we enjoyed our first success in a Classic this year. He also has a poor draw in 5 so we are hoping he can take one of his flying starts. I though he ran well in defeat last time out in Spk, he didn't really take to the track in Dundalk as i thought he would.

MATERIAL MAN- Blew me away in his latest trial(28.23). He lacks a yard or two of early pace which leaves him with a lot to do down the back straight. He really motors from the second corner though. Came from behind a few top class dogs in Kilkenny during the Juvenile, finished runner up to Barefoot Artist who has since made the Champion Stakes final. He takes his races very well and will improve with each look around the track. Will be hard to keep him out of the first 3.

SKILFUL LEGEND- A new dog in the kennel, caught my eye in the Red Mills unraced in Kilkenny, settled in ok. Trial around Spk was ok, he will improve. Yet to race around the track, but if he can run KK he can run everywhere. Its a great test of a dog. He showed nice early toe around there, im just hoping he can transfer that form to Spk. The Juvenile has already produced a Derby winner, don't be surprised if lightening strikes twice!

PAUL HENNESSY

JAYTEE JET- I spotted jet and his brother Dutch in an unraced in Enniscorty. I am very pleased with both dogs so far. Jet was thrown in the deep end by taking him over to the English Derby. Even in his race in Wimbledon before the Derby he impressed me finishing 2nd in a good trial stake. His run in the first round was amazing, he gave away lengths at the start and still managed to get up and win. He was eliminated in a messy 3rd round heat. He is really still only a baby Sept 13, so i think he can improve further. Jet faces a tricky opening heat, coming up against some well established trackers (Ballymac Matt and Greenwell Hulk) but think he is well capable of standing his ground in here. He is a dog for the future what ever happens in this Derby

PRICELESS LASSIE- She is a bitch i think the world of, started off extremely impressive in Youghal and then putting in a few big runs in Spk at the end of last year. The Oaks was always the target with this lady, but disaster struck in the first round after being turned over behind the eventual winner Ballydoyle Honey. I hope the fall doesn't affect her confidence, she is 100% sound and we are happy with her at home.

JAYTEE VALENCIA - We just got this dog back from the UK. He loves Shelbourne, he won the open 525 on final night last year. Super early pace and settled in right away. His form was up and down across the water but he was racing against the best around, his style of running suits the Irish tracks. Valencia's last two trial pleased me and he has a nice draw on Thursday night.

BUDGIE BYPASS- He is by a dog of our own Hello Deejay. Budgie has really out shone our expectations of late, he was runner up in the Champion Stakes behind Sidarian Vega and 3rd behind Rural Hawaii in the Race of Champions. He doesn't know how to run a bad race. He will stay out wide through out and could sneak through a few rounds. Hes giving his syndicate of owners a great run for their money!

BAREFOOT ARTIST- Juvenile winner in Kilkenny, we bred him ourselves. Badly drawn in the first round in 5 in a tough heat, we just hope he can scrape through. When this dog is drawn near the rails he is a different dog, Put in a great performance in the semi-final of the Champion Stakes from trap 1. Only turned two years of age last month so is also a dog for the future

SHANE DOWLING

BALLYMAC MATT- We have always though the world of this lad, from the word go he showed us he was going to be decent. Has a few good runs done around Tralee but has really taken off in Shelbourne. Things didn't work out for him in Wimbledon, but once he got back to HQ he took off again. Was ultra impressive in the Gain 600, going through it unbeaten and was within .03 of Sparta Maestro's record in the final. His run in Dundalk wasn't great, he didn't seem to run the track. Both myself and Dad were delighted with his trial last week and its all systems go for the next few weeks. Its a long way from Ballymacelligott to Shelbourne so we hope to be burning a lot diesel over the next few weeks, but we love it, you need an awful lot of luck in the Derby.
